Miyajima Zaiku Cooperative
Miyajima zaiku dates back to the end of the Edo period.
In order to construct Itsukushima Shrine, shrine carpenters and fingersmiths were invited from Kamakura and Kyoto to draw the flow of the technology in the current Miyajima craft.
The technique of loching and sculpture, derived from the techniques of shrine carpenters and fingersmiths, was brought to the world during the Kaei period (1848-1854), and the technique was enhanced to the realm of art.
Miyajima Zaiku, which eventually evolved into a craft with excellent artistry, was certified as a traditional Japanese craft in 1982.
It is said that the development of technologies such as loch and sculpture is due to the abundant forest resources of Hiroshima and the proximity to Hatsukaichi, a wood cluster.
Miyajima Zaiku was born in Miyajima as a elegant work of art and is loved and nurtured throughout the country.
